Justin Barton is an archaeologist specializing in terrestrial LiDAR applications for cultural heritage conservation and management. He is the chief technology advocate at CyArk, an internationally operated nonprofit organization founded in 2003 after the destruction of the 1,600 year-old Bamiyan Buddhas in Afghanistan. CyArk’s mission is to digitally preserve the world’s heritage with cutting-edge technologies and share these places freely with the public to tell the unique stories of humanity’s heritage in new and engaging ways. Responding to the accelerated loss of world heritage to violent weather, wars, and the passage of time, the unprecedented CyArk 500 Challenge was launched in October 2013 to digitally preserve 500 international heritage sites in five years.
